Custom Suits Near You in Los Angeles
Mr James is at 221 Culver Blvd, Playa del Rey, CA 90293, with free parking at the door. Fully bespoke, fully canvassed suits from $1,795, each one cut from a pattern drawn for a single person and made by hand in our atelier in Southern Brittany, France. Appointments seven days a week. Where we are not close enough, we come to you for $300.
Why distance matters more with a tailor than with a shop
Buying something off a rail is one journey. Having a garment made is not. Most people come three times, counting the free first hour, and some come four or five; that is spread across the four to six weeks the suit takes, or six to eight if the cloth is Italian or English and has to reach France first. Afterwards the pattern stays on file here, and the year of complimentary alterations that follows delivery tends to bring you back once more as your shape or your mind shifts.
So the real question underneath searching for a tailor nearby is not which pin is closest on the map. It is whether you will make that journey five or six times without beginning to resent it. Forty minutes each way answers that differently than twelve.
Three things make it easier here. The house sits on the Westside rather than in a tower on a one-way grid. The parking is free and immediately outside. And because the diary runs Monday through Sunday, a fitting can be taken before work or on a Saturday instead of being carved out of a Tuesday afternoon.
How close we actually are
Culver Boulevard is the thread that most of this runs along, and the showroom sits at the beach end of it.
- A few minutes. Westchester, and Playa Vista, which is where the first Los Angeles showroom opened in 2017.
- Five to ten minutes. Marina del Rey, over the bridge and along the water.
- Ten to fifteen. Venice and Culver City, the first up Lincoln and the second along the same boulevard inland. El Segundo is the same the other way, south on Vista del Mar.
- Fifteen to twenty-five. Santa Monica and Brentwood to the north, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach to the south.
- Half an hour, give or take the hour of day. Beverly Hills, West Hollywood and Century City.
Each of those has a page of its own with the drive from that direction written out. If you live in the neighbourhood itself, the page for the tailor in Playa del Rey is the one to read.
Parking, which in this city is most of the argument
There is free parking in front of the showroom and more behind it. No valet, no meter, no circling the block twice while an appointment starts without you. It sounds like a small thing to put on a page about suits. Anyone who has tried to keep a four o'clock fitting in Beverly Hills will know that it is not.
What each visit is for, and how long it takes
The first visit is an hour and there is no charge for it, whether or not anything is ordered at the end. You meet Robb or Ben, never a salesperson, and whichever of them you meet carries the commission through. Cloth is looked at with the prices in plain sight, then linings, buttons and detailing. Around thirty measurements are taken, head to toe, with three photographs from the front, the side and the back so that posture is recorded rather than guessed at.
The fittings afterwards are shorter, unlimited and free. They exist to move seams by small amounts, which is work that cannot be done over a telephone.
We are appointment-only, roughly nine until six, and we ask for forty-eight hours' notice so that the hour belongs to you alone. Book at the fitting calendar, or telephone if the slot you want is not showing.
If we are not near you
Then the arithmetic changes and we drive instead. A visit to a home or an office, anywhere in Los Angeles, is $300, and that figure covers the travel and the full cloth selection coming with us. Nothing about the garment costs more because of it. From Pasadena, Downtown, the Valley or the far side of the hills, one visit frequently costs less in time than a single round trip would, and for a group it is plainly the sensible way round. The detail is on home and office visits.
Flying in or out
LAX is a short run down the coast road from the door, which makes a fitting on the way to or from a flight genuinely practical. People who live elsewhere and pass through a few times a year are measured on one trip and fitted on the next, and the pattern waits here in between.
Questions we are often asked
Is there a bespoke tailor near me in Los Angeles?
If you are anywhere on the Westside, almost certainly. Mr James is at 221 Culver Blvd in Playa del Rey, which is under ten minutes from Marina del Rey and Playa Vista and fifteen to twenty-five from Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City, El Segundo and the beach cities.
How far will you travel for a fitting?
Anywhere in Los Angeles. A home or office visit is $300 including travel and a full cloth selection, and the garments themselves cost exactly what they cost in the showroom.
Do I have to come in person at all?
Yes, at least once. A pattern cannot be drawn from a photograph or from the sizes on a shirt you already own, and a fitting is physical work. If coming here is the difficulty, we will come to you instead.
Can I park at the showroom?
Yes, free, in front and behind. You will not need a meter or a valet.
Are you open at weekends?
Yes. The diary runs Monday to Sunday by appointment, roughly nine until six, with forty-eight hours' notice.
I am visiting Los Angeles for a week. Is that enough?
Enough to be measured and to choose cloth, yes. The suit itself takes four to six weeks in domestic cloth and six to eight in imported, so the fitting either waits for your next trip or we work it out between us.
