Custom Suits for Playa Vista

Mr James opened its first Los Angeles showroom in Playa Vista in 2017. Since 2021 the house has been a few minutes away, at 221 Culver Blvd in Playa del Rey. We make fully canvassed, fully bespoke suits from $1,795, cut from a pattern drawn for one man and made by our own atelier in Southern Brittany, France.

So this is less a tailor near Playa Vista than Playa Vista's own tailor, moved down the road. The same goes for Westchester and for anyone at Loyola Marymount, on the bluff above us.

The suit you wear twelve times a year

Playa Vista is an office district where almost nobody wears a suit to work. That changes what a suit is for. It comes out for a board meeting, a funding round, an interview, a wedding, a funeral, and it has to be right every time, because there is no second one in the wardrobe to fall back on.

That is the argument for having one made properly. A suit cut from your own pattern, in a cloth chosen for how you live, does that job for years. We set out why fit is read before anything else in why a suit that fits changes how you are read, and what separates one price from another in the difference between a $500 suit and a $5,000 suit.

If you travel

The airport is a short drive away, and a good deal of tailoring from this neighbourhood spends its life in a carry-on. For that, cloth matters more than cut. A high-twist wool sheds creases overnight on a hanger, where a soft flannel or a linen will not. Tell us how often the suit flies and we will choose accordingly. There is more in our guide to cloth for warm weather.

A custom shirt is $295, made to your own pattern in two to four weeks. If the problem is a suit you already own, alterations are $80 an hour and usually take a week.

Questions we are often asked

Is there a custom suit tailor in Playa Vista?

Mr James opened in Playa Vista in 2017 and has been a few minutes away at 221 Culver Blvd, Playa del Rey, since 2021.

Do you visit offices in Playa Vista?

Yes, for $300 a visit, with cloth brought to you.

I only wear a suit a few times a year. Is bespoke worth it?

That is the case it suits best. One suit, cut from your own pattern, worn for years. The pattern is kept on file, so a second commission is simpler than the first.

How long does it take?

Four to six weeks in domestic cloth, six to eight in imported. Shirts two to four weeks.
