Why a Suit That Fits Changes How You Are Read

Whatever you do — sales, consulting, real estate, finance, law — a suit is read before you speak. Not consciously, and not kindly. People register fit, and then they attribute things to you on the strength of it.

That is worth understanding properly rather than treating as vanity.

What people actually notice

Not the cloth, and not the label. They notice whether the collar sits flat against the shirt, whether the shoulder ends where your shoulder ends, and whether the jacket closes without strain. Those three things read as competence, and their absence reads as not-quite-right in a way most people cannot name.

A factory suit cut from a standard block in your nearest size will get perhaps two of the three. A pattern cut for your body gets all three, because the shape of the pattern can change rather than only its dimensions.

The part you feel rather than see

There is a practical effect as well, and it is not sentimental. A jacket that fits lets you reach, turn and sit without adjusting it. Men who are not managing their clothing stand differently and move differently, and that is visible.

Where the hours go

An off-the-rack jacket leaves a factory in minutes. A bespoke suit takes 50 to 80 hours, and the time goes into things you never see: around thirty measurements and three photographs recording posture, six to eight hours cutting a paper pattern by hand, and fifteen to twenty weaving in the canvas and horsehair that gives the chest its shape.

That canvas is the difference between a garment that improves with wear and one that bubbles after enough dry cleaning. It is stitched in, not glued. We have written the construction out in full in full canvas, half canvas or fused.

Building a wardrobe rather than buying a suit

If you wear a suit most days, the target is five to seven in rotation — not bought at once, but added to over a few years.

• Navy first. It is the most useful suit a man owns.
• Then charcoal, which does everything navy does in a different register.
• Then a lighter weight for summer, which matters more in Los Angeles than most places.
• Then something with character — a check, a texture, a mid-grey — once the staples are covered.

Rotation is not a luxury. Cloth needs a day's rest between wears to recover its shape, so five suits worn in turn outlast two worn to death by a long way. Care is covered in how to care for a bespoke suit, and odd trousers are often a better next purchase than a second suit.

What it costs

Two-piece from $1,795, three-piece from $2,045, overcoat from $1,200, odd trousers from $450, custom shirts $295.

Unlimited fittings and one year of complimentary alterations are included at every price. Half is due at cloth selection, the balance on delivery. Four to six weeks in domestic cloth, six to eight in imported Italian and English cloth.

Every garment is full canvas and fully bespoke, cut and sewn by hand by Max in our atelier in Southern Brittany, France. We do not offer made-to-measure, and there is no cheaper line of making at the entry price — the price is set by the cloth, the hand is the same throughout. Questions we are often asked

Is a bespoke suit worth it if I only wear one occasionally?

Honestly, that depends. If you wear a suit twice a year, a good off-the-rack jacket properly altered may serve you. Bespoke earns its keep on frequency, on an unusual build, or on an occasion where the photographs matter. We will tell you if it is not the right answer for you.

Which suit should I buy first?

Navy, mid-weight, two-piece. It goes everywhere and it photographs well.

What should I wear to the consultation?

Fitted trousers or jeans and a T-shirt, or a shirt that fits you well. Nothing baggy and not shorts — we cannot read your shape through loose clothing.

How long does the first appointment take?

About an hour, and there is no charge. You will sit with Robb or with Ben, never a salesperson.
