Terms of service

These terms apply to every consultation, commission, alteration and purchase with Mr James, 221 Culver Blvd, Playa del Rey, CA 90293 (“Mr James”, “we”, “us”). What we make

Every garment is fully bespoke: a pattern drawn for you from around thirty measurements, cut and made by hand in our atelier in Southern Brittany, France, and fitted in Playa del Rey or at your home or office. We do not offer made to measure or ready to wear. Because each garment is made to your pattern, it cannot be resold and is not returnable once cloth has been cut.

Consultations and appointments

The first consultation lasts about an hour and is free. We work by appointment seven days a week and ask for 48 hours' notice. If you need to move or cancel an appointment, tell us as early as you can; we do not charge for missed first consultations, but repeated no-shows may mean we ask for a deposit before booking again. Home and office visits are $300 per visit, payable in advance, and that fee is not refundable if cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice.

Prices and payment

Prices are quoted in US dollars at cloth selection and confirmed in writing. Published starting prices (for example, a two-piece suit from $1,795) are for house cloths; mill cloths such as Drago, Zegna, Holland & Sherry and Loro Piana are priced individually. A deposit of 50% is due when cloth is selected and your pattern is drawn; the balance is due on delivery of the finished garment. Rush orders carry a 25% surcharge. Wedding parties of three or more receive 20% off. Sales tax is added where applicable.

Deposits, cancellations and refunds

The deposit covers cloth, trimmings and the drafting of your pattern. Once cloth has been cut, the deposit is not refundable, because the cloth and the work cannot be reused for anyone else. If you cancel before cloth is cut, we will refund the deposit less any cloth already ordered specifically for you. If we cannot complete a commission for a reason on our side, we refund everything you have paid.

Fittings, turnaround and delivery

Domestic cloth commissions usually take four to six weeks; imported cloth six to eight. Shirts two to four weeks. These are estimates and depend on mill lead times and the number of fittings; we will tell you promptly if a date moves. Fittings are unlimited until you and we are satisfied. Garments are released when the balance is paid. Garments not collected within 90 days of being ready may be subject to a storage charge, and after 12 months may be disposed of after written notice.

Alterations and remakes

Every commission includes one year of complimentary alterations for normal changes in weight or preference. If a garment cannot be brought right by alteration because of an error on our side, we remake it at no charge. Alterations to garments we did not make are charged at $80 an hour, quoted in advance; we will tell you honestly when a garment is not worth altering.

Care

We will tell you how to care for each garment. Damage from improper cleaning, storage, pests or accident is not covered, though we are usually able to repair it for a fee.

Your measurements and pattern

We keep your pattern and measurements on file so that later commissions are simpler. You may ask us to delete them at any time. How we handle your personal information is set out in our Privacy Policy.

Website

Content on bespokemrjames.com, including photographs and text, belongs to Mr James and may not be reused without permission. The website chat assistant gives general information and indicative availability; it cannot make a binding booking or quote, and anything it says is confirmed by a person before it counts. We may change these terms by posting a new version here; the version in force when you placed your deposit governs that commission.

Liability

Our liability for any commission is limited to the price paid for it. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California.
