Tailoring Services in Los Angeles

Mr James is a European tailoring house at 221 Culver Blvd, Playa del Rey. Robb founded it in 2010 with Max, the house's atelier in Southern Brittany, France, who has cut and made every garment since. Everything below is full canvas and fully bespoke — drawn from a pattern made for one person. We do not offer made to measure.

This page lists everything we make, what it costs, and how long it takes. Nothing is hidden until you are in the room. If it is the suits that brought you here, the whole of that work is set out on our page for custom suits Los Angeles.

If you are still working out what sort of tailor you actually need, our page for custom tailor Los Angeles sets out the four trades the word covers and what each of them is good for.

What we make, and what it costs

Two-piece suit from $1,795
Three-piece suit from $2,045
Tuxedo and black tie from $1,795
Overcoat from $1,200
Odd trousers from $450
Custom shirt $295
Alterations $80 per hour
Visit to your home or office $300

Those are entry prices in our house cloths. Finer mills run from Drago at $2,995, Zegna and Holland & Sherry at $3,495, to Loro Piana at $3,995. Unlimited fittings and one year of complimentary alterations are included in every price, at every level. A fuller account is on our page for bespoke suit cost Los Angeles.

Fifty per cent on commission, the balance on delivery. A rush is possible at twenty-five per cent. Wedding parties are twenty per cent less.

Bespoke suits

The house's principal work. A pattern is drawn for you from around thirty measurements and three photographs that record how you actually stand, then cut and made in Brittany. Four to six weeks in domestic cloth, six to eight in imported Italian or English.

Business suits, odd jackets, separate trousers, and the soft-shouldered navy that most men in Los Angeles need more than they need a formal one. The stages of commissioning bespoke suits Los Angeles, from the first hour with the cloth to the last fitting, are set out in full on that page.

Which of those a man actually needs, and what the number of pieces and the closure change about a suit, is set out in our guide to the types of suits. And if the navy is settled and it is the second commission that is the open question, which suit colour to buy first takes the shades in order.

Wedding suits

For grooms, and for whole parties. Six months is comfortable; three months is perfectly workable; six weeks is possible as a rush. A year out is too early — men change shape, and so do their intentions about the day.

Parties of several commissioned together are twenty per cent less, and how a party of five or six is best sequenced is covered on our page for groomsmen suits Los Angeles. More on wedding suits Los Angeles. Our step-by-step guide to how to get a wedding party measured covers the measuring day and the groomsman who lives out of state.

Tuxedos and black tie

From $1,795, which is roughly what four or five evenings of hire cost. Grosgrain or satin facings, one button or a shawl, trousers with a braid and no belt loops. Everything we make for a custom tuxedo Los Angeles, down to the question of a cummerbund, has a page of its own.

Custom shirts

$295, made to your own pattern, two to four weeks. Collar shape is the part most men have never been asked about and the part that shows above a jacket all day. Collars, cuffs, cloth and fit for custom shirts Los Angeles are set out at length on that page. Our guide to shirt collars and cuffs takes each shape in turn, and the knot and the face each one suits.

Overcoats and odd trousers

An overcoat from $1,200 — the garment everyone sees first and almost nobody has made properly.

Cloth, length and the case for having a coat made in a warm city are set out on our page for custom overcoats Los Angeles.

Odd trousers from $450, which are frequently the honest answer when a man asks for a second suit he will not wear. They are also far less formal than the name suggests: flannel, cavalry twill, cotton drill, moleskin and linen are commissioned at least as often as suiting cloth, and with no jacket to match, every detail of the trouser is yours to decide. Our guide to odd trousers — what they are and when they beat a second suit covers the cloths, the detailing, the cost and why a spare pair roughly doubles the life of a suit.

Alterations and repairs

$80 per hour, usually a week. We will alter garments we did not make, and what can honestly be achieved with suit alterations Los Angeles, along with what cannot, is set out on that page. If something cannot be improved enough to be worth the money, we will say so rather than take it.

We also reweave moth holes and replace worn linings, which is very often the right answer for a good jacket that has aged. Our guide to how to care for a bespoke suit sets out the habits that keep a garment out of the alterations room in the first place — resting, brushing, steaming, and how rarely a suit actually needs dry cleaning.

Visits to your home or office

$300 anywhere in Los Angeles, with cloth and finished garments brought to you. It works particularly well for a group commissioning together, and for men who genuinely cannot get to Playa del Rey inside business hours.

Full canvas, in every garment

A full canvas jacket has a layer of horsehair and wool stitched between the cloth and the lining. A fused jacket — which is most of what is sold, including a great deal of expensive made-to-measure — is bonded with adhesive. It looks correct in the shop and bubbles after a few years of heat and dry cleaning.

We make full canvas at $1,795 and we make it at $3,995. It is not an upgrade here. The comparison is set out honestly on our page for made to measure Los Angeles, including the cases where made to measure is the sensible choice — we simply do not make it.

How a commission runs

An hour, free, with Robb or Ben. One of them is at every appointment; you will not be handed to a salesman. Cloth chosen with the prices in front of you, then measurements and photographs. The pattern is drawn and kept, so a second commission is much easier than the first.

Fittings are unlimited and included. So are alterations for the first year. There is more on booking a fitting, including what the hour covers and what is worth bringing with you.

Where we are

221 Culver Blvd, Playa del Rey, CA 90293. By appointment, with forty-eight hours' notice. Free parking front and back.

Book a private consultation — or, if nothing on the calendar suits, telephone 310-503-3592 and we will find a time. You can also write to mrjames@bespokemrjames.com.

A commission also makes a considered present. A Mr James gift card can be put towards a suit, a shirt or an alteration, and a small range of house pieces sits in the shop.
