Groomsmen Suits in Los Angeles

Mr James makes bespoke suits and tuxedos for whole wedding parties: the groom, his groomsmen, fathers and brothers. Parties commissioned together are twenty per cent less. Every man is measured on his own, has his own pattern drawn, and is fitted until it is right.

We are a European tailoring house at 221 Culver Blvd, Playa del Rey. Everything is full canvas and made by hand in our atelier in Southern Brittany, France.

Why a party is usually dressed badly

Five men of five different builds are put into the same hired suit in five stock sizes. Two of them look fine. The photographs last for decades. The fault is never the colour. It is that nothing was cut for the men wearing it.

A bespoke party solves it the other way round. The cloth is shared and the patterns are not. A tall man with a long back and a broad man with a short one end up looking as though they belong in the same picture, because each jacket was drawn for the body inside it.

Matching, or belonging together

Groomsmen should belong together without being identical to the groom. The usual answer is one cloth, or one colour family, for the party, with the groom set apart by a waistcoat, a different lapel, or a cloth a shade richer. Black tie simplifies it: everyone in a dinner suit, and the groom distinguished by detail.

The options are worked through in our guide to how to dress a wedding party, and the suit-or-tuxedo question in tuxedo or suit for your wedding.

What it costs

Two-piece suit from $1,795
Three-piece suit from $2,045
Tuxedo from $1,795
Custom shirt $295
Wedding parties twenty per cent less

Unlimited fittings and a year of complimentary alterations are included for every man. Fifty per cent on commission, the balance on delivery. Unlike a hired suit, each man keeps his, and his pattern stays on file for the next one.

When to start

Six months before the wedding is ideal. Three months is comfortable. Six weeks is possible as a rush, which carries twenty-five per cent. A year ahead is too early, because men change shape and so do plans. The full timeline is in when to order a wedding suit.

With a party, the practical difficulty is diaries, not tailoring. Start with the groom, settle the cloth, then bring the others in over the following weeks.

We can come to you

A visit to a home or office anywhere in Los Angeles is $300, with cloth brought to you. For a party it is often the simplest way to get everyone measured in one evening. More on home and office visits.
