Custom Suits for Beverly Hills
Mr James is a European tailoring house in Playa del Rey, about half an hour from Beverly Hills depending on how the 405 is behaving. We make fully canvassed, fully bespoke suits from $1,795, cut from a pattern drawn for one man and made by our own atelier in Southern Brittany, France.
Beverly Hills has no shortage of tailors, and several of them are very good. We are complimentary about our competitors and would rather explain the difference than argue about it.
Why men drive down here
Two reasons, usually.
The first is the making. A great deal of what is sold as custom in this city is made to measure on an existing block pattern, and a great deal of it is fused rather than canvassed. We do one thing: full canvas, fully bespoke, from a pattern drawn for you and kept on file. There is no cheaper tier and no faster tier. We have set out the whole comparison on our made to measure page.
The second is that the overheads are different. A ground-floor room on a Beverly Hills street is expensive, and that cost sits inside the price of the suit. We are a storefront on Culver Boulevard with free parking at the front and the back. The saving goes into the cloth and the canvas rather than the address.

Finer mills run from Drago at $2,995 to Loro Piana at $3,995. The price is set by the cloth; the making is identical at every level. Unlimited fittings and one year of complimentary alterations are included. A fuller breakdown is on our cost page.
If the drive is the problem
It often is, and there is a straightforward answer: we will come to you. A home or office visit anywhere in Los Angeles is $300, including travel and a full selection of cloth, linings and finished garments to look at. For a first consultation in Beverly Hills, Century City or Holmby Hills, that is frequently the more sensible arrangement — an hour in your own office rather than two hours of driving.
After the first fitting, most men find the trip worth making. It is a short drive at the right time of day, and there is no hunting for parking at the other end.
How a commission runs
The first meeting is an hour and costs nothing. You meet Robb or Ben — one of them is there at every fitting, and you will not be handed to a salesperson. We look at cloth with the prices in front of you, then take around thirty measurements and three photographs, which record posture.
From there the pattern is drawn and the garment is made in Brittany. Four to six weeks in domestic cloth, six to eight in imported Italian or English. Most men come in three times in total, counting the consultation. Fittings are unlimited, so nothing is signed off until it is right.
We are open Monday to Sunday by appointment, roughly nine until six, with forty-eight hours' notice.
