Custom Suits for Century City

Mr James is a bespoke tailoring house at 221 Culver Blvd in Playa del Rey, about twenty-five minutes down the 405 from Century City. Since 2010 we have made fully canvassed, fully bespoke suits from $1,795, cut from a pattern drawn for one man and made by hand in Southern Brittany, France.

Century City is a place where a suit is worn every day and judged by people who wear them every day too. The towers are full of law firms, talent agencies and finance, and the tailoring they ask for is conservative, exact, and expected to last.

Suits that work five days a week

A rotation is the honest answer. Three suits worn in turn last years longer than one worn daily, because wool needs a day on the hanger to recover. We usually start a Century City client with a navy and a charcoal in a mid-weight worsted, then add a lighter cloth for summer and a flannel for winter. How to care for a bespoke suit covers the rotation and everything else that makes one last.

For the courtroom and the boardroom

Lawyers are a large part of our Century City work, and the brief differs by practice. Dressing for a Los Angeles courtroom works through what each expects and which cloths stand up to being worn in court. A three-piece is worth considering for anyone who takes the jacket off at a desk; is a three-piece suit worth it gives the honest answer.

Shirts matter as much in this part of town. Ours are $295, and what to order first explains the two or three a working wardrobe needs.

Why full canvas, and why it matters here

A fused suit from a department store loses its shape within a year of daily wear; a full canvas suit improves with it. We make nothing else, at any price. Full canvas, half canvas and fused explains the difference, and the difference between a $500 suit and a $5,000 suit explains where the money goes.

Getting here from Century City

South on the 405 to Howard Hughes Parkway or Jefferson, then west to Playa del Rey; or Sepulveda the whole way. About twenty-five minutes. Most Century City clients have us come to the office instead.

Who comes to us from Century City

Lawyers, bankers, agents and the executives who work alongside them. The order is nearly always a pair of dark suits to begin, then shirts, then an overcoat for travel, and the client stays with us for years.
