Custom Suits for Men in Los Angeles: How a Hand-Made Suit Is Built

You know it when you see it. Clean lines, a shoulder that ends where the shoulder ends, a waist that sits where it ought to. It reads as quality before you can say why.
Most of what produces that effect happens before the cloth is cut, and almost all of it is invisible on the finished garment. This is what actually goes into one.
Bespoke means a pattern cut for one person

It starts with a consultation — around thirty measurements head to toe, plus three photographs recording posture and stance, because a tape does not tell the atelier how a man stands. Cloth is chosen with the prices in front of you, then linings, buttons, stitch colours and a monogram if you want one. The cloth is then cut by hand and matched down to the grain line.
Canvas — a layer of horsehair and wool — is stitched in between the cloth and the lining rather than glued. It breathes, it moves, and it gradually takes the shape of the man wearing it, which is why a full-canvas jacket fits better in year five than in year one.
Fifty to eighty hours, and where they go
An artisan tailor spends 50 to 80 hours on one suit. A machine produces an off-the-rack jacket in minutes. The hours go roughly here:
- One to two hours taking around thirty measurements, with three photographs recording posture and stance
- Six to eight hours cutting a paper pattern by hand
- Fifteen to twenty hours weaving in the canvas and horsehair structure
- Three to four hours measuring, cutting and pick-stitching buttonholes
- As many fittings as the garment needs — at Mr James these are unlimited and included, and most men have three counting the consultation
A European house, making in France
A word on where we sit, because it is a fair question to ask of anyone writing about hand tailoring.
Mr James is a European house, not a British one. It was founded in 2010 by Robb Pollard and Max, our atelier, who has made every garment we have ever delivered by hand in his workshop in Southern Brittany. We have been in Los Angeles since 2015 and on Culver Boulevard in Playa del Rey since 2021. As far as we know we are the only genuinely European suitmaker working in this city.
What matters is not the postcode but the discipline: a pattern cut for one person, a canvas sewn in rather than glued, and a fitting process that does not end until the garment is right. Every suit we make is full canvas and fully bespoke. We do not offer made-to-measure, and we keep no cheaper line of making for the entry price — the price is set by the cloth, and the hand is the same at every level. Wedding suits in Los Angeles
More men come to us for a wedding than for any other single reason, so it is worth saying plainly how that works.
A groom's suit is the one garment he will be photographed in from every angle, for several hours, in daylight. That is an unforgiving test, and it is the argument for a cut pattern rather than a rental: a rented jacket is made for a shape close to yours, and the camera finds the difference across the shoulder and the chest.
On timing, six months before the wedding is perfect, three months is comfortable, and six weeks is possible as a rush at a 25% surcharge. We will gently discourage you from ordering a year out — men change shape, and a suit cut to last year's frame is a suit that needs remaking. Very few houses in this city publish their prices, which we have never understood. Ours are these, and they are starting prices set by the cloth:

Questions we are often asked
What makes a suit hand-made rather than machine-made?
The canvas and the pattern, chiefly. In a hand-made jacket a layer of horsehair and wool is sewn in between the cloth and the lining, so the chest can take the shape of the man wearing it. In a machine-made jacket that layer is glued to the cloth instead. The pattern is the other half of it: ours is drawn on paper for one person from around thirty measurements and three photographs, rather than chosen from a range of standard sizes. Buttonholes, the lapel roll and the collar are finished by hand, which is where the work shows if you look inside the garment.
What does the word tailored actually tell you about a suit?
Very little on its own. Tailored usually means an existing garment altered to fit you better, or a factory suit cut from a standard block in your nearest size. Bespoke means a paper pattern cut for your body alone, from your own measurements, and a garment built on that pattern from nothing. The second takes a great deal more hand work and can be adjusted in ways the first cannot, because the shape of the pattern itself can change.
How much does a decent wedding suit cost?
A rental runs $150 to $300 for something you give back. A reasonable off-the-rack suit sits between $400 and $900. Bespoke in Los Angeles generally starts around $2,500 and climbs steeply. Ours starts at $1,795 for a two-piece, full canvas, made by hand in France, and the groom keeps it.
Is the construction different at $500 and at $5,000?
Usually, yes, and the construction matters more than the cloth. A $500 suit is almost always fused: the front is glued to a synthetic interlining, which is quick, cheap, and eventually bubbles after dry cleaning. A $5,000 suit is full canvas, hand-sewn, cut for one body, and it improves with wear. We have written this out at length in the difference between a $500 suit and a $5,000 suit. At Mr James the construction does not change with the price: every garment is full canvas at $1,795 and at $3,995 alike.
Is my pattern kept for a second suit?
Yes. The paper pattern drawn for your first commission is kept and adjusted over the years, so every later garment begins from something rather than from nothing. A second suit, an odd jacket, trousers at $450 or a shirt at $295 all start from the pattern we already hold, with a check of anything about you that has changed.
Why does Mr James call itself a European house?
Because the house was founded in Europe and the garments are still made there. Robb's training and his eye are English, and Max, our atelier, cuts and makes every garment by hand in Southern Brittany, in France, as he has since the house began in 2010. The fittings happen here in Playa del Rey. As far as we know we are the only genuinely European suitmaker working in this city, and there are other fine tailors in Los Angeles who are not.
How long does a bespoke suit take to make?
Four to six weeks in domestic cloth, six to eight in imported Italian and English cloth, which takes longer because the cloth has to reach the atelier in France first. Shirts are two to four weeks.
